Sunday Report: Nope. Nothing---FTP Double-guaranteed week!

I had a long day of running below expected. Played 21 mtts and was down about $260. Sundays seem to be the day that has been giving me the most trouble lately. Cashed in just one of the 21 mtts I played and after 6-barrelling the double-deuce, I can see why I had such a down day. Played pretty well I thought. One thing I seem to be doing is getting too much money in preflop as just a slight favourite. I think I get it in my mind that they are just small tournaments so I can try to double early, but I may be costing myself by not allowing more decisions to be made postflop.

DOUBLE GUARANTEED WEEK BEGINS TOMORROW!

After looking at varying strategies on P5's I think I will be using the one that allows me to play the lower end of my tournaments ($11 fo and less and $3r and less) and put max entries into those. I think this is ideal for me as I do find my most success in those. Though I have a busy week I am excited because I know I have been giving myself more chances as I get playing more often. I will definitely be hoping to avoid all-in preflops as many tourneys progress as I seem to be losing that key flip or 80-20 when all the equity is on the line.

Also, my tournamentpokeredge.com membership runs out in about two weeks and I am trying to decide if I should keep it or not. I have been watching every video made but am not finding that they are adding too much to my game. A reason for that could be that most of the more skilled players are playing the HSMTTS and I am still playing the low/micros where the intricacies of their play is useful.

I am happy to get a chance to keep playing though as my roll was almost gone a couple weeks ago. I have been stuck at around $11k profit for the year for a while now and hope to make the next jump in the next week. I am also hoping to hit the 500mtts for the month this week aswell.

ahh the days go by

bankroll is back up. Hovering the last week or so and making some deep runs. have found these rush-turbo mtts to be really good and have made some deep runs in them. Made a final table in one yesterday and the beauty thing about them is they take about 3 hours start to finish. went out 8th when i shove from the cutoff with QJo and 14bbs and the button had AA. $360 when first is $4200 is frustrating for sure. Leaving a lot of money on the table this year. Hope to get some results before the month is out.

It's not much, but it will have to do.

Amidst my quest for bankroll recovery I have been able to fix a few leaks that I think I have had in my game for the last little bit: I have been playing scared. I remember I made a withdrawal in mid February that lead me to that position. With my bankroll at around $4500 I thought I had more than enough and that I could even afford to pull out $2000 to throw in the bank without worrying too much. I did and right afterwards began the big downswing. Now looking at my stats over the past month is kinda sad. I have moved from a legit low-mid stakes grinder to a micro-low player. For me this is embarrassing in that not many people can make a living off playing the micros. From when I was staked my average buy-in has moved from around $40 to about $11. I just can't believe it happens. At what point did I think a $26 buy-in would be my biggest of the day?!!
There is, however, a reason for the change. It really has a lot to do with the quality of the tournaments that Full Tilt has at the low stake and how profitable they are. When I look at my last 10 scores, none of them are in a $26 mtt. This is rediculous to me considering winning one of those was my first big score and that was over two years ago!

I am really enjoying playing the low stuff and usually I am the best player that gets deep in these things. What I would like to do is increase my success late in the $26 daily mtts.

I was able to make a deep run in the $1 1rebuy 1add-on today. I picked up a second place score of $1190 and was okay with the second only because I got lucky when we were down to about 12- I won with 44 v. kk v 99. I picked spots well and was a 9-1 dog headsup with 12bbs. We got it allin the first hand with my a9s shoving after he limp called the button ako. It was fine and not a bad return on a $3 investment.

Bankroll in manageable position and hoping to keep it that way for the time being. I can feel the scores piling on. I have been getting deep in the midnight madness every night and am just waiting for the right time to win a flip late. Soon I am sure.

17 Straight Losing Sessions Ends!

After almost a month without a final table and a profitable day I am bursting and very pleased to get a score. Yesterday I took some time off from online and heading to our local casino for some $1-2 NL and a small $55 buy-in tournament. I played well in the cash game and in about an hour and a half came out just above even ($25). The tournament was a very fast structure (can't blame them for wanting to get the things done with quickly- five tables and only $250 going to the house they aren't making much money) and I found myself in shove mode after the first break (an hour and a half and 4 levels). I shoved several times mostly based on position spots and finally got JJ utg and shoved for 3900 (5k starting, 200-400), sb calls and holds with QQ.

Today, things were about the same as I had left them. My roll had dwindled about $1600 at its peak and I was not looking very good. I have always taken a good view of losing streaks but this length of one was ridiculous. I played only 6 mtts tonight and the one I made a deep run in was the $2 rebuy rush turbo==Cramsession. I ran pretty well until the final table where the avg stack was always 20bbs or less. I picked good shove spots and when we got 3 handed we all had around 4-5million. The button raised to 1million (100k-200k 10k ante) as he had been overraising and I autoshove AJo in the sb. bb folds and he calls with A8o with me covered by about 900k. He flops the 8 and I don't improve. 3700first, 2400 second. 1700 third. I'll take it. It sucks cause this guy got very lucky so many times but it happens. Bankroll restored at $2600 and I can breathe again!

New PB in MTT Volume Achieved (45): Another Losing Day

As said above I took a lot of time today to try to get some good volume in. I have been looking all over the place and trying different things in an attempt to get my poker game back on track and into the winning flow again. Today I thought it would be good to play a bunch of the 45 and 90 man sit-n-goes. I was able to pump out 40 mtts (including the morning slate with the sngs) and found myself down about $160. I took a few hours off in the afternoon and plate the evening slate. As you can find playing only 5 tournaments at a time, things can get slow. I was, however, happier with the way I played with just the 5 tables going but didn't make any great deep runs.

I have heard people talk about when you get into slumps and wondering how you ever won before. I think I am in something like that right now. It has been over 3 weeks since I made a final table and I have had 12 straight losing sessions. I have to change something, I think. For the rest of the week I will try to get things back together. I am on a $1200 downswing and have let almost half my bankroll dwindle. I can always get more money, that is for sure. However, if I do I won't be reloading for the amount I have right now. I need to draw a line in the sand and make this week work. I will be playing just the a handful of tournaments a night and focusing on each one of them very hard.

Let's see how this goes. I have faith in my skill, I just need to get the confidence back with a nice score before the MiniFTOPS starts this weekend.

February Review: $1950.20 Profit ---MEHHHh

This month has been a pretty tough one. Coming in I had made a great effort to watch a ton more videos and put in more hours. After a few weeks and making about half a dozen deep runs in tournaments I was pretty discouraged. I really let things get away from me and after a $800 downswing, I ended the month with the following numbers.

235 MTTs
120 Hours
$1950.20 Profit.

I have one more month left of Tournament Poker Edge and I have seen it do very little for my game. It is good to see videos but I think most of the players do not take the time to tell the viewer why they are making certain moves often enough. I have decided to refocus on playing the evening tournaments and I know this will be good month.

GOALS

300MTTs
150 Hours
$7000 Profit
5 Final Tables

I can feel that my focus is back and it is going to be a good month

Tough Day-very hard to get anything going

Early Tuesday morning and I decided to play the morning sked of tourneys. Usually populated by Russians and other Euros, it is definitely the easier way to make money. The downside to the weaker players is the volatility of the action. Very often I can find myself with either 200bbs or out of the tournament in the first two hours (my style usually waits for better spots to get the money in and I almost always make it through the first two hours of tournaments).
Today was a crapshoot like no other. In one, I was up to 250bbs in the first hour. Lost two races and an 80-20 and I was out. In a qualifier for the Sunday brawl I ran into a guy that pot raised called a 50bb allin with 97o headsup for the ticket. Second was $80 but this guy was so happy to get his money in no matter what spot, he was obviously happy to see he was up against my 66. Why shove with 50bbs and 66? Well he had raise-called several all-ins in similar spots with any ace and being down 2-1 in chips I needed a double. Maybe if I had know he would have called there I would have waited. Ohwell.

It has been 7 sessions since a win and can get frustrating. The good part about it is that I have been able to maintain small loses in my losing sessions and have gone down very slowly while the jumps usually pretty decent.
I know I have been playing well, I am just waiting to get to that spot deep where I can win a race to make the final table and take something down. Things are getting dry around here and I'm hoping for something to happen this week.

I am positive it will. I am playing all the weaker players and getting in great spots. In the $11 cubed I was in a sick double up spot for 3rd in chips heading to the money.

With a short all-in and a good stack for it. I flatted the button. The sb came along and I just called his flop bet and raised all-in on the turn.

It wasn't to be. A dirty river and I went busto. I went out quite quickly from the other two I was in and am almost relieved to be done.

I know the one-outers will come back to me. They always do. I would just prefer to hit my one-outer when deep in a tournament for a huge pot as opposed to early in the $3rebuy for a small pot.

I AM GOING TO GET DEEP THIS WEEK__

Oh Boy. I Eat, Dream and Live Poker.

I don't usually make a point of inflicting pain onto myself. However, that seemed to be exactly what I am doing this morning. I wake up about 5 hours after going to sleep (6am). I played the slate yesterday - the noon slate with more success than the evening - and found myself trying to review hands from the previous session. As I am doing so and finding that my Sunday slate has to be the most pathetic of anyone out there to call themselves a "pro" (when I say pro, it does not directly relate to my skill level versus the average level of the best players in the world- just merely that I do this for a living, as meager as it may be at times). I am also finding that the reason I am waking up so often in the early mornings is that I am dreaming or having nightmares about poker. When you immerse yourself so much into the daily grind of poker (and more frustratingly, playing the micros where even a good day can be only a couple thousand profit), you can find yourself dreaming about the most ridiculous things. While most men probably dream about women or sports (I really don't know, I haven't been normal for many years), I dream about having to milk a short stack late in a $3 rebuy. I dream about how am I going to barrel the river when every draw just got there and I have 40% of my stack already in the pot. You know the movie Inception? It talks about the activity of your brain when in your deep sleep and you awareness that you are dreaming etc? Well, I know I am dreaming - I really do most of the time. The problem that I find is that my brain seems to be working on such a high level that it's like I cannot contain it. It wakes me up and there is no chance of me going back to sleep.
*I don't suppose it helps that I watch poker for the 30-50 hours a week I grind, I listen to poker podcasts when I clean the house, walk the dogs and fall asleep. Or that even in my leisure time I watch every episode of the newest shows on the sports channels.

So now I find myself at 6:50am. Up for an hour checking out the final 3 tables of the FTOPS ME ($640 Buy-in - $1.3 million for first). I am such a poker degen that I am making notes on these players. The odds that I run into them at my tables is very low, however, it might be the optimist in me that thinks I might need to use these notes one day. Let's put this lightly. I am more f*cking jealous of these pricks than I can put into words. Now down to the final 16. Next out gets over $31k. The play is pretty good thought too. There is not one flop, it seems, that is seen without a 4 bet making its appearance. I feel, though, that the play is not out of my level - I just need to get there. Many of these guys have put 6 bullets into this event - $3240! That is more than my current bankroll-!
It's not like I'm saying that I'm the worst in the world or anything - I make money from this, no doubt. I am just lamenting where did I go wrong? There are numerous times in my poker playing career that I can say I probably missed good spots. I don't want to cause I think about them most days. What I do know is that I am too much of a nit when it comes to poker and my bankroll. I am having a decent start to the year - all without running well deep in most of my tourneys. I am playing really well but it can be disheartening to know that you have only $10,500 profit almost two months in and many of the guys that are younger and less experienced than me and playing bigger and better. I hope I can use this as a stepping stone. I am looking for that one big score (not big like most online pros think- but like $20-30k) that will get me going again. I want to keep more money online and get myself more comfortable in my bankroll so I can play the sunday majors and go for a nice score.

I really think the upcoming MiniFTOPS will be quite telling in how my poker career will turn out. If I can make some moves and run deep in one of them I love my chances against the average player. I really can feel it. This year was supposed to be a year of $70k profit - I want more. I don't want to be average but I want to crush the mid stakes. I don't think I would ever play the high stakes MTTS - I don't have the stomach for the swings and frankly don't think I'm good enough. However, I can crush anything $109 and under. We'll see how this coming month or so goes.

16.5 Hour Losing Day

I've put in a lot of long days in my time playing online. I have played for over 24 straight, some days with 20 hours played and a tiny afternoon nap and over 20 15+ hour days. What I usually find at the end of those long days is that I have had a winning session. For the most part the reason for the long days is that I have been playing well and have made some really deep runs in some mtts. Today I put in a long day. I play late last night from midnight to 430am, slept for 5 hours and played for much of the rest of the day. I just finished now, and had a deep run in the $3rebuy. Having the chip lead with 36 players left I thought I was in the right spot for the win. With my leading stack around 60bbs, it certainly wasn't deep as I ran a couple big hands into slightly bigger ones. I had set myself up perfectly to double up with 20bbs after a loose player utg raise 3x and a weak Russia flatted with his 22bbs. I jammed from the button with 33 and the original raiser folded, only to have the Russian snap call with 66 and hold for a top 5 stacks. Out in 26th.

I also made a deep run in the 2pm but faded away in the 50s I think. I am getting pretty frustrated as it feels like I haven't made a deep run in a long time. I did cash for $879 on Sunday but then I also withdrew again and now my bankroll is at a pretty modest amount again. I know I am playing well early and am just waiting for the deep run and my chance to outplay people. It just seems I pick up a hand in some tough spots of late and can't get away from it.

I wasn't down a lot by any means, however $132 is a lot worse than the expected $900 I should be earning in that time. I think I'm playing live cash game tomorrow night so I'll have lots to talk about in that way I'm sure. Its been a slow month (only up around $2500) but I know it will turn around if I keep putting myself in the spots to win.

Things will definitely happen, just have to wait for the spots.

Early Double = Worst Players Alive

The $6 Early Doubles at 4pm are pretty much the lowest level of tourney that I play when I play the slate. They usually end up in the lull between the noonish and evening tourneys. That is except when I play them on Sundays. Since on Sundays the afternoon tourneys are kinda blended together with the double-deuce, I just threw these two onto my slate to give me a couple more to play. The multi-entry FTOPS was on aswell and I was only able to secure one bullet for the $129 so I didn't have much to play. I busted from a few tourneys in gross fashion and by around 730 I was left with just the Early Double B. I had squeezed into the money with about 10bbs and before I knew it, it was down to 80 and I had doubled up a couple times. I picked my spots well and won a few races and was chip leader when it was down to 18. I turned on the recorder and knew that if I got anything less than 1st I would be pissed. I played well and was able to adjust to how weak the field was. These players were doing some really bad things. They included:
  • calling any pf raise in the blinds and donk leading every flop then folding to a raise
  • 4x raising for half their stack and folding
  • limping with 8bbs and folding to a min raise
  • open shoving 40bbs KQo and showing it
AND- all of this happened when we were down to the "best" 18 of the tournament. I picked my spots great and was able to have the chip lead with 8 left at the final table. We saw players bust out, waiting til they had 5bbs to finally call off a raise with J8o. It was so bad I dare not explain it all. I had made a video but it again was too big for youtube.  Finally after messing with the weaknesses of the players and doubling people up a lot. I got headsup with a really weak player down 1.9m to 1.1m in chips. I was using my button to play most hands by 2.5x raising or limping (since he never raised a limp). He was using his to 3-4x raise and fold quite a bit. I got caught 3 barrel bluffing once and was down pretty low. After getting just below his stack I button raised to 90k (3x) and he made it 245k. I shoved with AJo and he snap called with a5o (never good here and I had never 4bet yet) He showed A5o.

I never once thought of making a deal with this mutt. He was so bad that I should win that 9 out of 10 times. I did get lucky to get to that point - enough luck that I think it made up for me running below expectation for the day. $879....kinda ridiculous considering the extra $550 he takes for first after winning the 30-70 but I have done it many times to people before. Again, I leave some money on the table. This is not something big to report about but  a nice little boost to the bankroll and will keep me moving forward and gathering some momentum for the rest of the month. I am certain my good play will become more evident late in tourneys. Glad to turn a min cash into something. Back at it tonight -  maybe tomorrow morning. Either way. I love that I get to do this for work right now :)

Another Close One-6th in Noon $26

Today was another chance at making a big dent in my goal for the year. I had moved my total mtt amount way down from yesterday because I found 30 in 8 hours was just too much to follow and maintain my edge as it got deeper in each one. Today I only played 9 - and mostly dumped the small buy-in multi-entry tourneys that I have yet to make a good score in anyways. I made two deep runs in $26 tourneys, which are the best way I find to make up chunks of scores, just fewer chances.
I was trying to balance getting my cashes with giving myself a chance to win. That usually involves opening up my game near the bubble and exploiting people making steals by 3-bet shoving. The problem with that is that I was unable to pick up many hands while still in the 15-20bb range (usually the best position to be effectively 3-bet shoving). When that happens and I drop below the 15bb range, I will tend to just try to make the money. It is definitely a very passive way to play and shouldn't be used normally. However, when its the difference between a down day and an even day, I will sometimes take that line and try to sneak in. As we got into the money (108 players), I was in the bottom 10 players. I tried to make a video with some hand review in it so I could check out my play later. I hope that I'll be able to watch these at a later date and also be able to learn from mistakes that I made deep in the tourneys. I tried to get that video uploaded onto youtube but it was too big so I will just keep it on file.

it was a good day in that I jumped over the $10,000 mark for the year and I feel I am playing well. I think I have to avoid leaving so much on the table and focus on closing these things out when I get a chance.

Wednesday Grind

Played 22 tourneys Wednesday including the minislate from 6pm on. Didn't make any deep runs in the guarantees but was able to make a profitable day by winning two of the little non-guarantees. Not a bad day $355 profit with a freeroll at the slate so I'll take it. Moves me to $1500+ profit four days into February.

A Nice Lil Comeback

Started out February with a little smaller of a bankroll. I was around $1650 going into play yesterday and had decided that no matter what the tournament I needed to play a lot. I entered everything that was within my chosen stakes and was playing as low as $2 tournaments. With this strategy I am hoping to play no only the regular guarantees, but also the a win in the smaller tournaments helps to boost morale and cover the days playing costs. Its kinda like throwing a bunch of sh*t at the wall and seeing what sticks. Yesterday I played 16mtts and only cashed in 2. I was able to make a deep run in the $11 1r 1a at 1130am. I played really well accumulating chips and was the chip leader with 18 to go. I was not getting a ton of hands and just outplaying people who were inexperienced. With 15 left I had 99 in the sb and raised 2.5x and got shoved on for about 80% of my stack. With only about 50bbs I was never going to fold 99 here and called. I lost to AQo with a dirty ace on the river and was down to 7bbs.

I milked my stack really well and picked my spots to get me to the final table with 67k (6.7bbs). I knew I could outplay everyone and was able to double up once and watch as people faded away. I made it to 4 handed with second in chips and eventually lost a three way all in with the two short stacks. I held J10cc v A8o (7bb original shover) and JJ (player woke up with hand in bb) I double up both as a 4liner made a8o the wheel and was short. I never got things back from that and lost with AJo to the bigstacks sb shove k2s for about 9bbs. I made $1440 and was pretty happy. Though I felt I left about $2600 on the table. Decent start to February and brings my yearly up over $9000.

January Review: $7875.26 Profit

Just finished up my last day of play in January. Coming into the month I had planned to put in a lot of volume and try to maximize the deep runs I could make. I played 21 days for 150 hours and 264 MTTs. I was did not make as many deep runs as I would like to have and most of my Profit came from one lone Sunday. Although I did make a decent amount, I know I cannot continue like this. Because of FullTilt's Multiple-entry week, I lost about $400 in profit and missed 4 days that I would normally play.
I made a run at sit-n-goes but found that they can be very volatile with your bankroll and are too much related to luck.
On the upside - I did run into a ton of really weak players and I would estimate I busted from about 1/3 of my tourneys getting very unlucky. One today sticks out that reminds me of that:

This player made a really light 3bet- which i dont think was too bad. I was pretty sure he was not very strong and would fold to a 4bet. when he flatted and I shoved the flop (I think he has to have a big hand to call here- qq, JJ, 1010), he literally snap called and turned the diamond. This guy ended up finishing 5th and making about $1200. Just a really weak play from a weak player and this type of thing frustrated me.

For FEBRUARY:

- I won't be playing FTOPS since I am pretty much elminated from affording the multi-entry buy-ins
- I will look to focus more and play only my strongest tourneys- no omaha, superturbos or multi-entries.
- My goal for February is to make 5 final tables and $10k in profit.

Sunday Jan 23 2011

A Word on PLO8
I had a pretty interesting Sunday yesterday in which I played for about 13 hours and profited about $150. Most people would say making that in a day is a good thing. And while it is a good thing to be up money rather than down, with the volume I am playing and the weakness of the fields on Sunday I am pretty disappointed about the overall results. I did final table a OHiLo tournament and finished in 6th for $294.75.

This tourney was a pretty weak field. I consider myself a pretty much pure NL Hold'em player but do think  that I am fairly strong in PL OHiLo. I won the nightly PLO8 tournament a couple months ago but until now have had very little other successes. I think PLO8 is a game of reading people and hands and once you have a read on your opponent, making them make really tough decisions about what to do next. In order to win these tournaments you have to get lucky...a lot. I played well, yes, but in order to get deep you really need to make hands and have them hold. I got unlucky to get knocked out but by the final table the average player had only 8bbs. I was pretty happy with the result, though the $1440 for first would have been nice too.

NOTHING happened anywhere else..
In all the remaining tournaments I cash in 4 of them but had no real deep runs. The skill level of the players will allow you to get lots of chips and build a chance to win or get busted early. Never more are there players open shoving 30 hands in a row in a $26 tournament than on sunday. I think I was down about $100 in the NLH tourneys I played.
This Week
I have no huge plans to play this week as it is multi-entry week on Full Tilt and I don't play anywhere else. I will likely attack the midnight madness tournament with the max 4 entries because the fields are so weak and with the double guarantee week going on also, it will be a $7k first prize with me getting a shot at it four times. By far my most successful tournament I hope to make a final table or two playing that this week. FTOPS is right around the corner but I don't think I will be playing at all. I think with the multi-entries I have a huge disadvantage to the better, higher stake players. It looks like I will finish the last week of the month not playing a whole lot. I have put in good hours and had a nice little profit for the first month of the year. I want to keep pushing it and reach my goal ASAP and shoot by it. I have been living on TournamentPokerEdge.com and hope it shows in my game!

Subject: Varia

Cashing a lot is important
Over the past week since I won two tournaments on a Sunday, I have found little success. I had a downswing of about $500 (not much really considering the volume I am putting in), but it was especially frustrating with how deep I was getting into tourneys and just missing the money. For the most part I don't really care if I just squeak into the money in most tournaments. I think it is important in maintaining my bankroll for me to cash in about 1 in 5 as it helps minimize the loses day-to-day. Getting to the money provides another type of flexibility in play; it allows most players to open up their games and they usually play a lot weaker. There are basically two ways to approach the money bubble that I use.
  1. If I am below 25bbs, I will play as few hands as possible and hope to get in the money with the intention of doubling up early in the money and giving myself a chance to win.
  2. If I have more than 25bbs, I will gauge the reaction of the table and attempt to raise quite a bit until someone fights back. This will allow me to gather extra (hopefully) conflict-free chips and also give me a perceived image that I likely won't carry into the money section.
Considering the stakes I am playing (about $200-250 a day), having two cashes for $50 can really add up.
Its been hard getting to my dough
The year has been off to a pretty good start. I have been able to make 3 final tables and profit $8299.42 with an hourly rate of around $80. The issue with Full Tilt and my banking institution is that I would have to go through a third party to get my money. Instead, I take the longer way around and have the money sent in cheques. However, the maximum cheque they will issue is for $2000. This makes it difficult as there are waiting periods for each payment to be requested. I cannot image the frustration for some others that may use this system as it could take weeks to get a big score off the site. I suppose a good problem I would like to have.
FTOPS XIX
Is shite. The site has totally diverted from the strengths I think it used to have. With events now and almost ten games covered they have ruined all three of my favourite tournaments. No Limit Hold'em is the main game still. And will be for the next few years at least. I have a problems with how they are running these tournaments because they are chasing away the regulars like me with how they have set up the schedule.
My favourite tournaments (not surprisingly the 3 non-turbo, non-rush, non-rebuy) are now eff'd up. The FTOPS #1 has always been played the first day of the event. This year that first day is the Superbowl. Scratch that. Event #22 is a $129 Knockout tournament and usually has the biggest field of the whole series with well over 10,000 people. This FTOPS, they have made this a multiple-entry event. This is an event in which players can enter themselves numerous times in the event and play simultaneously. For me this is a real piss off and I think it should be for a lot of low stakes players because now the high stakes MTT'ers are able to buy 3, 4 or 5 shots into this tournament whereas I am not willing to put that money in for a field that will likely be stacked with pros. The argument goes that if each high-stakes pro enters 4 times than the field will be diluted with pros because most amateurs won't have the resources to throw $500 or $600 into this field. They are doing the same for event #24, the $322 buy-in and I certainly am not willing to put $1300 into that tourney. I can understand why the site wishes to do this as it gives them potentially 4x the rake with little trouble to them, however, I think they may be missing the point of the FTOPS to many people. To me, it is a chance to parlay $26 into a 6-figure score if I can get lucky enough. I think they will lose a lot of the attention from people who don't play often enough that will now be looking at a field that will have 4 entries from all the top 1-2000 players in the world.
My opinion may change after I see the events, but I don't think I will be playing any of these in the upcoming weeks.
Double Guarantee Week
Starting next Monday, double guarantee week, which comes along once every two months (I think, it could be once a month or once every 3 months, but I don't know for sure) will be starting. With standard prize pools doubled it means the action will be that much juicier. However, what did they decide to do? The people at Full Tilt have made double guarantee week coincide with multiple-entry week. So, for a whole week I should be expecting to pay 4x the amount to play all the tournaments on my regular schedule? If that were to happen I would be looking at $800-1000 a day in tournaments and I do not think I am ready for that kind of volume. To counter-act this, I may drop all $26 buy-ins and over and just play the lower stakes stuff. That won't be too much of a problem as I think I have an edge in most of these fields but it could be annoying. I'll have to report back on the success of that week. I am a creature of habit. Who knows, I may love the multiple-entry week and do really well. We will see.

One Final Table Yesterday
I finished 3rd for $1800 the 11:30am $11 (1r,1a). There was a maniac at the table who was really bad but bad in a good way for him - he was crazy and ran good! I can't blame him for the way he played; he actually took out the only 3 good players at the table making super thin all-in calls and holding up. Down to three handed myself and another player were both around 20bbs and just looking for spots. After he had raised 4.5x from the sb for the 5th straight time, I shoved for my 22bbs with Ah3h and he snap called with KJo (He could afford it) The flop was nothing, I turned a flush draw, leaving him with 5 outs and he hit one on the river. I would have been down 2-1 in chips to him and probably destroyed him heads-up after we took out the other guy but it wasn't meant to be. It was nice to get a cash and get going up again.
I am really happy with the volume I am putting in but would like to make more deep runs than I have been of late. I'm really confident that I can make a good run at my goals for the year and blogging about it can only help. I am still using Tournamentpokeredge.com and have found it adjusting my game a little here and there.

Not every day can be smooth

Yesterday was a tough one. Not for any specific beats or bad play - but because I wasn't able to get anything going. It seemed like every tournament I played I was walking with two left feet. I would get to the mid stages of most of the MTTs and as I got deeper I would run into a cooler with less than 20bbs and be out just like that. I think my biggest strength is playing a stack 30-40bbs because I am able to accumulate chips against weak players in and around the bubble. The problem with yesterday was that I was never able to get into that spot. I played 13MTTs yesterday and had only one cash. I was down $223.80 and the only cash I had was to get into FTOPS #1 in the upcoming series. When does the new FTOPS start?? How about the worst possible day...The Superbowl! I know that FullTilt is an international site and they have to cater to people all over the world, but starting your biggest poker series on the biggest sports day of the year in North America has to be a mistake. February 6th is by far my favourite sports day of the year (unless the leafs somehow make the playoffs one of these years) and its too bad but I will be missing event #1.

Regarding yesterdays play, there weren't any horrendous hands that I can go over to explain how I bricked out on 12 mtts that aren't bad beats to bore you with. I am just glad that I was able to win that seat to get something positive out of the day.

I am playing again today and will be studying a bit on TournamentPokerEdge.com to get some new ideas. I got the membership earlier this week but haven't spent more than 2 or 3 hours on the training videos. I'd really like to continue the success for the month and get a couple more tourney wins under my belt.

Boom- Sunday Wrap Jan 9 2011

The day started out pretty slow. Since the first of the year I had no final tables and had been putting in twice the volume than normal. I was really actually torn about whether to play anymore once the 4:22pm double-deuce was over. I had played and busted from all of my first 11 or so tournaments and felt pretty dejected about the whole thing. Sundays have normally been good days for me and just from my experiences on that day (I was playing well but just running below expected), I felt like it might be a good idea to take the rest of the day off and join the family for dinner. However, since Sundays are the juiciest for most varieties of poker, I thought it would be best to stick it out and register in the evening stuff as well.

I played everything from 6pm to midnight as well as a bunch of smaller buy-in, non-guaranteed tournaments.(For those who don't know - most tournaments have a guaranteed prize-pool that encourages a larger amount of people to sign up for it so they can play for its larger top prizes). As midnight came around, I still found myself in 4 tournaments and pretty deep in two of them (7pm superstack and $3rebuy). I was doing well in chips and as usual in the lower stakes,  I am by far the best player left. The first place prizes were pretty decent and anything that I see that is over $2500 is definitely worth playing for. With the Sunday-sized fields, I was pretty pleased with the first place prizes for $11 and less buy-ins.

For the most part, online MTTs show quite a high variance (Even with my low $2000 bankroll I go on swings as much as down $1000 before I win again and as seen the first week into the year being down $450+) and the luck factor is largely the same for most with the exception of the superstacked tournaments. Full Tilt runs 3 superstack tournaments: 930am, 1pm and 7pm. These tournaments provide so much play that if I am able to get deep in one of them wiht 40+bbs, I am a big favourite to take it down.

Side note, for the deep stack tournaments many adjustments have to be made to playing styles if you play similarly to myself early. My style is to play tight early and wait for the blinds to go up and antes start. Once that happens, I play a lot more aggressively in position and am able to mix it up a lot more. Since for the first hour you are 100bbs deep, I only play AKo and any pair from pos and KQ, A10 or better and any pair from late position. What this allows you to do is get a feel for the table while also avoiding unnecessary deepstack play out of position with weaker hands.

So as I am getting into the money in these two tournaments, all the others are finished, its about 2am and I am near the chip lead in both. At this point I am feeling pretty confident. I have pretty good ideas on how everyone at my table is playing. I am in 4/27 in the Superstack and 1/19 in the $3 rebuy. As the tables break and get shorthanded again, I begin to run over everyone. I don't use a heads-up display or poker tracker so I am not sure how many hands I won in the span from 3 tables to the finish, but I am pretty sure it is about 40%. It got to the point where people were talking to me, saying:  "You can't have it everytime" and trying to encourage others to step in and take me on. With my big chips and my ability to see who wants to make the final table more than take a chance, I am able to accumulate chips and fold trouble hands with the idea that I can outplay people so much that I don't need to take a chance by getting into races. I am folding AQ, JJ and smaller pairs. i even check call twice and get a check back on the river with QQ to an allin player with a side pot versus 99 when the 99 had me slightly covered because I know the value of making the final table and outplaying these weaker players. Now don't get me wrong, I did have to call some allins and for the most part I ran well in those spots. I did win a pretty big pot that catapulted me to the final table of the superstack.

Int he hand I was utg+2 with 26 players left. I had the chip lead with 1.2 million and a player utg raised 4x (I was pretty sure from his 4x raise that he had a big hand - he had around 600k). He had raised to around 40k and I have KK and because of his raise size, just call. A player with about 14bbs behind goes allin and he isolates for his whole 600k after very little thought. Now, I am not saying that I won't ever fold KK preflop (I have done it twice in mtts but both much earlier in the tournament), but considering the stacks sizes and the fact that I have totally undervalued my hand here, I have to call because he could be doing it with so many other hands (AK, QQ,JJ, 1010, AQ maybe). I call and he shows AA. The other player had 1010. The board comes out 910J two diamonds (I have the Kd - he has no d). The turn is gin Qd and he is drawing only to a K. The river is the Ad and I take down a huge pot. Now I would not have been out if I had lost but I had a final table stack with 26 players left, so I was in a good spot.

Even though it was for low stakes, it was kind of cool to see the two final tables right next to each other and at this point I was already counting the money. We were 3 handed on the $3 rebuy and down to 9 in the superstack.

After starting the rebuy final table slow I was still able to raise and steal so many blinds that I was able to absorb the 3 big races I lost at before any players were eliminated. i did win two allins with a smaller ace all-in preflop to bring me to chip leader with 4 players to go. After one of the players began to come back in the tournament and was right on my heels, something weird happened. His internet cut out and he was sitting on away mode with 3million in chips! Immediately to my right and the two other players shortstacked, I would get he benefit of stealing his BB and getting walks from him when I was in the BB. I thought I would leverage the other players to get blinded out until they made a stand and eventually get headsup with a dead stack.

Now this, I think is a question of ethics. Should I ever feel bad for this fella having his internet disconnect and as such, play slower? I don't think I can afford to. With the other players at the table in such a difficult position, I think I have to say too bad to him and really put the pressure on the others. Surprisingly they fought back quite a bit and I ended up doubling them each up on a race in which i lost both. The away player came back and seemed pretty tilted. Though he had a normal stack, he quickly donated his 1.8million that was left to me and I was 3 handed with 6 of the 10million in play. I did my normal raising and the third player went out shortly after when I sucked out for a 2.5million chip pot with a8 vs AJ. Headsup was going to be quick. I had him 6million to 2million and I hoped to win it all when we got allin on a J57 board. He had QJ and I had 68. I bricked and he talked deal. The break down was 1st - $2992 2nd- $1843. So with even stacks we decided to play for $100 and split it around $2400 each. I was okay with this. I had yet to win the other tournament and with the blinds pretty big (35bbs each) I thought it was okay to secure some extra funds. I tookdown the heads-up in short order and banked almost $2500 for that win* (partial chop).

The superstack took much longer but I found even less resistance. I went into beast mode and was taking down every blind til we were 3handed. With a first place prize of $5476, I was pumped to take it down. 3 handed I about 6milion in chips and second place 5million, 3rd 1.5million. I was playing very aggressively and knew that the third place player wanted to move up in payouts as he barely played any hands and did not have much success in his previous cashes. It came to a hand 3 handed that set up the rest of the tournament.

In the SB I picked up Kd5s and after the button (1.5m) folded, I limped for 25000 to complete the 25k-50k 10k ante blinds. The BB (5m) raised to 150k. I thought about it and called as he had raised a decent amount of time and I was able to outplay him on flops. The flop came down Ad5h4d. i check and he bet  225k. This is a pretty auto-cbet so I call with my mid pair and backdoor flush draw.  The turn is the 7d, putting 3 diamonds on the board and giving me a pair and the nut flush draw. I lead for 425k into a  880k pot. He thinks and calls. The is the 2d giving me the nuts (other than 34d for straight flush- I put this out of his range needless to say). With the pot at 1.7million. I bet 1.020m and expect to get calls from any diamond 9 or 10high and raised by only a bluff and maybe the Qd. He thinks and then shoves for his remaining 4.2m. I think for a second or two but can't fold ofcourse. I call and he shows QsQd for the second nut flush. I take a massive 11.5m to 1.5m chip lead into headsup.

The first hand of heads-up I limp with 59o and he checks. The flop comes down 257all spades and he open shoves for 1.4m. I think about it and with 9s I call. He shows J7o and no spade. I get superlucky and turn another 5 to win the tournament. A great feeling to get this done on the same night.

A total profit of $7625.83 on the day and my first $5k+ cash of the year. Things are looking up! With my total profit above $7k in the first 10 days, I am happy to see how the rest of the year goes!

I did end up joining Tournamentpokeredge.com and was able to listen to a couple of their MTT podcast discussions while I played. I was able to pick up some good ideas and I think for the most part my weakness is playing too tight in the midstages with a medium stack. I will still be looking to pump out over 2500 MTTS this year and I think I'll be able to keep that pace going. Overall, Great start to the year!

First Close call of the year

Just finished a deep run in the 10am 16.5k and ended up busting out in 15th for $138. I was playing well and had about 110k with blinds (1200-2400 300ante) and about 27 people left. I raised Utg to 6340 with AA and the sb shoved for 40k with KJd and flopped two pair. After a missed bluff hand I was into survival mode and held on til 15 players left and I had AK in 2nd pos. I shove with blinds 2k-4k for 34k and the button iso'd with JJ. I turned an Ace and the river was the J. A good run and I really played well. The field is so weak and after searching everyone at my table once inside the money I was only able to find one winning player. After 50 tournaments this year I have not quite made my share of deep runs but I have also not run quite up to expectation. In this, the first week of the year, I have played twice as many tournaments as I was last year per week and I think the benefits will begin to show as the downswings will come and go much faster. Probably going to play the full slate sunday and might get a chance to play tonight or tomorrow night versus the really weak players.

Most Brutal Hand from 2010

The hand I chose to include here, I found while searching the net. In this hand the German kid becomes the scum of the earth with his play. I can't believe everyone at the table handled this so well - I might have punched this kid in the mouth but at very least I would have provided a few choice words for him.
UNBELIEVABLE!

TournamentPokerEdge.com??

The last two days I have put in 9 hours each day and played about 25 total of my best tourneys. I have been finding some good success getting into the final 20% of the fields based largely around just playing standard and accumulating chips playing ABC and making good hand selection based on positions. I have been noticing the raise-sizing more often from players and have been really diligent in making notes on them.

I have found that not watching TV while I'm playing is helping me stay in the games BUT I do also find that I can get a little bored if I am only playing 3-5 tables. I have considered playing more tournaments, however, since the last couple weeks has been pretty slow, I have decided to play just the tournaments that I have been the most successful at. Though, as I write this, I decided to jump in a OHiLo $26 FO (I did win it a one of the most recent times I have played). I have cut out playing the small rebuys as I find them to be too much of mine-fields in the mid stages and I don't feel like sweating all those all-ins early on; the main problem with the quality of play is that the really poor players are not eliminated as they can always rebuy.

The newest and most exciting thing is my plan to join Tournament Poker Edge - a training website that is sponsored on Poker Road Radio. It is pretty cheap to join and I would be able to join for $70 for 3 months. As I wait to confirm that I will be provided the option to leave the site after the three months, I will be joining this week.

I had thought that I would post a hand history each day to keep myself introspective but that seems to be quite the task following a full day of playing. I have two hands that I will post below probably mostly for myself to see at a later date as I doubt anyone reads this very often.

In this hand the action preflop was a C/O raise 2.3x I flat from sb and bb calls also. The Flop checked around and the turn I lead 2/3 pot at what looked like a safe flop. The bb called and the c/o min raised. I shove and the bb isoshoves and shows 88. Pretty tough hand to get away from with about 140 people left of 2300 in a $11 superstack. I was sitting at around 30th place in chips and this is what seems is the only way I ever go out of tournaments in this type of position - but not much you can do about that.

In this hand utg had min raised to 1000 and next player made it 3500. I cold called in the bb and utg called also. the flop I checked and the utg lead 1500 - the next played huge overshoved. I had seen this played shove twice in the last ten hands for several times the pot without showdown and I thought considering the board and the weak lead that KK or AA would likely raise smaller and since I had undervalued my hand I thought it was very possible that he could have an overpair 99-JJ and maybe even AK. I called and the utg folded. All-in player showed AA and knocked me out deep in a tournament. Again, not sure if I could have played it much different.

That is it for now, will be back later this week - hope to get a good weekend in of play and focus on my main tournaments where I find success.

First Sunday of the year

January 2nd was the first big poker day of the year. The fields were big and the players were weak as usual but it was hard to get much going. While running well below expected I finished 3/21 in the money and in the cases where I did cash, I didn't come in with a big enough stack to do much.

I played about 6 shootouts to the 750k and got to the final two in 5 of them in the first round but lost in the "big blinds and jam" heads-up sections. I think I might have been out played in 1 of them but got in pretty normal preflop allins with the best and worst hands the other times. That part was frustrating.

In the one tournament that I did have a decent stack late, the 12pm $26, I was in a hand with the really good pro "P0KERPR0". I have played with him a bunch of times before and find that his mid-stage game is really strong. If he puts in a preflop raise, a lot of the time he is never going to fold it. To some it may seem like an exploitable tactic, however, considering the stakes and the players he is playing against in these low-buyins, I have found that it works well for him and that the other players really need to pick up a hand. There is one hand I remember from a while back where I button raised 2.5x with KQo late in a tourney and he three bet shoved from the bb for about the fourth or fifth time and I just didn't think he could have something everytime. I called for about 30bbs and he showed AJo. I outflopped him and he was out. Those seemed to be the type of good situational plays that he had made - maybe a lot of it was luck for him, that I had a decent hand and he finally hand a hand for showdown but it felt like he put himself in a lot of spots to make his opponents make mistakes.

In this hand we were down to the final 197/2063 and i was at about 18bbs. The H/J min raised and P0KERPR0 called from the C/O. I have a pretty easy call with KQc in the bb.

The action went as follows and I am left with a decision. I think most of the time PP (P0KERPR0) would 3bet pf with AQ, KK, AA and he might not raise a min lead with QQ on this flop. At this point I am left with him on a bluff, 66, 77, KQ. His raise size is such that it appears that he wants to raise enough to get away from it (or appear as though he can) but I think my hand is probably too strong to fold at this point. Considering the min cbet, my hand is definately under-repped but I think this is one of the spots where it is too strong to fold.
I shove, HJ folds and PP calls and shows KK. In retrospect and considering the stacks behind him, I really should have included AA or KK in his range as raises with most hands in pos and most often when he is just flatting preflop, he will be doingv it with a big hand at this stage.

I made a very small cash there and finished the day -$225.80

Here comes 2011 - Goals for the year

With 2010 being over and not having such a great year by the numbers - profit just under $30,000 and didn't play nearly as much as I would have liked to. I decided to set some goals for myself for the year along with my stats for 2010 next to them.

  • $70,000 Profit (US$)
  • 2 months over $10,000
  • 6 cashes over $5000
  • 50 Final tables
  • 2500 MTTs
  • play two live tourneys $1000+
  • get bankroll to a steady $5000

I think I can very realistically attain all of these goals and I am determined to do so. While the game is getting harder, I think the small stakes still provide a much softer chance to make lots of deep runs and avoid luck to do well.
